Covid-19 Prevention For Aschiana’s Children And Their Families In Camps For Internally Displaced People

We were pleased to be able to answer the call to fund urgently-needed hygiene materials for prevention of the COVID 19 virus, protecting 340 families in 2 IDP camps outside Kabul, where Aschiana has schools.

Aschiana’s staff have been working to provide education and support to those in the IDP camps for the past 25 years and knew where and how to intervene to prevent the spread of the virus in these communities. IDP, Internally Displaced People have come from other regions of Afghanistan, often affected by war and the destruction of their homes and livelihoods.

The majority of people in the IDP camps live in unhygienic conditions and were unable to take the necessary precautions against Covid-19, to protect themselves and their children who are especially vulnerable.

Most of these IDPs are daily-wage workers and their children work on the streets. Many of them are suffering from health issues. This made them especially prone to the virus.

ASCHIANA STAFF VOLUNTEER TO ASSEMBLE HYGIENE PACKS

Aschiana’s main school and HQ in Kabul City, closed its doors at the beginning of the pandemic. However, the teachers and other staff members volunteered to work together, on the steps outside the front door, assembling the individual hygiene packs containing gloves, soap and face masks for distribution in the IDP camps and to street working children and families in Kabul.

ASCHIANA’S SCHOOLGIRLS MAKE EXTRA MASKS FOR THE COMMUNITY

Girls from Aschiana’s Tailoring and Sewing Dept were allowed back into the building, maintaining social distancing, to make extra face masks. These were distributed free of charge to people in their communities. It was a source of great pride to these schoolgirls, knowing they were making this contribution to help protect the poorer families in Kabul.

MATERIALS PROVIDED

In all the materials provided to protect 340 families in the camps, for up to 2 months, included Disinfection materials and Sprays; 25 masks per family; 25 pairs of hygienic gloves per family and packs of hand-washing soap. These were distributed in the camps and the sprays were used to sanitize rooms and people’s property.
